Memory care staff have typically taken special courses or seminars on how to care for seniors with behaviors like aggression, depression and confusion.

Memory care can be found in specialized memory care facilities that are licensed as assisted living facilities, but catering only to the memory care residents.  Memory care can also be found in a secured area in a larger community that offers independent or assisted living.  Some residential homes are also experienced with residents who have dementia, but do not pose an elopement (wander) risk.

The floor plans are typically one floor, with level walking surfaces.  Most reputable facilities take significant interest in design, with elements like s enclosed court yards for freedom and also security, and pets for residents to enjoy. The floors are distinctly different colors than the walls, so as to not confuse a person’s gait. Semi-private rooms are available and sometimes preferred to prevent loneliness and isolation.
